Client Need:
The Mike Utley Terrain Park at Craig Hospital in Englewood, CO, world-class rehabilitation facility, squeezes multiple pavement surfaces into a small park-like setting on the hospital grounds. These surfaces challenge the patients as they learn to maneuver, in spite of their disabilities, in different paving circumstances.
Solution:
Colorado Hardscapes worked with GH Phipps to come up with some appropriate concrete finishes that fit the limited budget. They installed a ramp of Bomanite 4”x6” River Rock imprinted concrete that challenges the disabled to navigate uneven and unpredictable surfaces. Steps, curbs, an agility slab, and other obstacles, with two integrally colored light broom finishes, completed the challenges. Cocoa and Omaha Tan Davis Colors were used throughout the park to visually separate the areas and give it an overall aesthetically pleasing look.
Results:
Thanks to generous donations from the Mike Utley Foundation, the Colorado Garden Show, the Cloverleaf Foundation, and nearly 200 people who purchased engraved bricks for one of the pavement areas, the physical therapy department at Craig saw their dream of such a park come true. Utley is a former Detroit Lions football player and graduate of Craig’s rehabilitation center.
Awards
