CASE STUDY INDEX
Client Need:
Nuszer Kopatz Design wanted to create an attractive park in a new housing development near Aurora Reservoir. To break away from the classic park look they wanted Southshore Five Acre Park to be free of hard, straight lines. The undulating lines of the walls, walks, and plaza areas works well with the cast-in-place concrete and are consistent with the theme of flowing water.

Solution:
To fulfill the design intent, colored concrete with Sandscape Texture™ is chosen as the base to which special sawcut scoring and staining of 12" bands is added. The mini-overlook also ties into this theme using Sandscape® Texture, scoring, and staining. The mini-overlook is the perfect place to stand if you want to catch a glimpse of the cast-in-place exposed aggregate weir that was used in drop structure to ensure a consistent flow of water. Specialty playground walls were used for terracing and retaining. These walls include a reverse batter, rustication strips to create a "cap", and both portholes and "mock" portholes, all which were installed on various radii to conform to playground layout. The final element of the design is the cast-in-place bullnose steps with a Sandscape Texture.

Results:
All of the different elements tied together to fulfill the intent of the design and the result is an attractive park, free of hard straight lines combined with the drop structure resulting in our desired flowing water theme. The 40th ACI Awards Program awarded the project an Award of Excellence in the Parks and Open Space category.
