Reactive stains, also referred to as acid stains or chemical stains, react with the concrete. The reaction creates a variegated appearance on the concrete surface. Reactive stains are not always predictable but create interesting organic concrete colors. Chemical stains will produce a wide range of finished colors depending on many factors including, but not limited to, finishing techniques, mix designs, curing and sealing practices, age and condition of concrete in existing slabs, base color and surface porosity. There is an element of uncertainty and unpredictability inherent in the use of and final appearance of chemical stains,including uneven, mottled or translucent effects. Samples and mockups are recommended for any coloration technique. Stains can be used inside and outside. Their life depends on factors such as traffic, weather exposure and maintenance.
Concrete dyes are more predictable than reactive stains and offer more color choices. Dyes can be applied to both new or old concrete with proper preparation. Concrete dyes generally yield fairly consistent results provided the concrete is mechanically ground prior to application. Samples and mockups are recommended for any coloration technique. Dyes can be used for interior applications. Their life depends on factors such as traffic, UV exposure and maintenance.
