What is Bomanite?
Bomanite is stamped, or more accurately imprinted, concrete. Imprinted concrete has a pattern and a texture and is often used to simulate real stone or brick. It can be less expensive than real stone set in a concrete sub-slab, but the main reason to choose Bomanite is the wide range of color choices and the customizable shapes possible with imprinted concrete.

Imprinted concrete is created using two colors to give it a depth: a color hardener (base color) and a release agent (highlight color). Both of these colors are chosen from the Bomanite Color Hardener/Release Agent Chart, but because the colors can be mixed in different ratios the color choices number in the thousands.

Colorado Hardscapes is a licensed Bomanite contractor for Colorado. We receive imprinting products and training from the leader in the imprinted concrete industry, The Bomanite Corporation.

Bomanite FAQs
Q: Is Bomanite® a type of concrete?
A: Bomanite® is a brand name for the process of coloring and imprinting concrete. Bomanite® is the company that originally came up with the concept of imprinting and coloring concrete about 35 years ago. CHI is the sole Bomanite® licensee for Colorado.

Q: How creative can I be with Bomanite®?
A: We are constantly testing new combinations of products so that you will always have new decorative concretes available to choose from. We have a Research & Development group that can take your ideas or needs and turn them into a one-of-a-kind decorative concrete project. Stamps for imprinting concrete can be designed and produced specifically for a project if desired.

Q: Am I limited to using decorative concrete on the exterior of a project?
A: Bomanite® is being used extensively on the interiors of buildings to add a dimension to floors and amenities unavailable until recently.

Q: How long have you been doing Bomanite®?
A: Over twenty years.

Q: What type of concrete do you use in your Bomanite®?
A: We use a 7-sack mix that includes fiber mesh.

Q: What is the minimum sized job you do?
A: 700 square feet for flatwork (all finishes), and 1000 square feet for floors.

Q: What about durability in our severe freeze/thaw climate?
A: The products that go into a successful installation include the concrete mix design that is proportioned just for our specific use here in Colorado. The color hardeners mentioned below, specific installation techniques used by our crews, and the application of a proper sealing system once the Bomanite® installation is complete, all lead to a very durable product that is designed just for Colorado, and will give you many years of trouble free service.

Q: Is Bomanite® slippery?
A: Usually not to an unacceptable level. Because of the sealers used, Bomanite® repels water that beads up on the surface. However, if high skid resistance is required, there are additives for the sealers that significantly reduce slickness.

Sealing and Upkeep
Q: What kind of sealer do you use?
A: We most often use water-based acrylic sealers with a fairly low sheen.

Q: Can I re-seal my concrete on my own?
A: Yes, and in fact we recommend that. The only product CHI recommends is Okon Seal and Finish which may be purchased at Kwal Howells Paint and Wallcoverings. One gallon will do about 200 square feet. Please follow all of the instructions on the container carefully and exactly.

Q: How often must I re-seal?
A: The necessity to re-seal depends upon the traffic and wear on the surface. The sealer does help preserve the integrity of the concrete by reducing moisture penetration. Another reason for re-sealing is for appearance sake.

Q: If my concrete patio gets chipped, can it be repaired?
A: Yes, in fact with the variegated texture and color of our Bomanite® it is almost easier to successfully repair than uncolored concrete with a standard finish.
