What is Non-Reactive or Con-Color?
Non-reactive (sometimes called topical) stains do not react chemically with the concrete as reactive stains do, and will mask some surface defects rather than enhancing them. Non-reactive stains typically have bolder colors and may be used on interiors or exteriors.

Con-Color is the non-reactive stain Colorado Hardscapes uses most often, and those are the specifications to use for topical stain.

To learn more about Concrete Staining or any of our products or services schedule a presentation for your office or group. Email info@coloradohardscapes.com or call 303-750-8200.

Please note: Our minimum job size is 700 square feet for flat work and 1000 square feet for floors.
What is Reactive Stain or Patène Artectura®?
Reactive stains (also called chemical or acid stain) can be applied to new or old, plain or colored concrete surfaces. The acid in these stains opens the surface of the concrete. This allows the metallic salts to reach the free lime deposits. These Metallic salts react with the lime and this reaction produces the final color. The stain system used by Colorado Hardscapes for reactive staining is called Patène Artectura.

Factors that affect the outcome of the final coloration include:
  • Concrete mix design
  • Concrete finishing methods
  • Concrete age and moisture content when stain is applied
  • Weather conditions when stain is applied
  • Base color
  • Surface porosity
Reactive stains are a good way to achieve a mottled look on a concrete surface.

This system does not hide surface defects, but works in conjunction with the existing floor to produce a variegated finish.
Reactive Stain or Patène Artectura® FAQs
Q: What is Patène Artectura®?
A: PA is a system for coloring and sealing interior or exterior concrete that will give the concrete a mottled, variegated look not achievable in any other concrete coloring system.

Q: What makes this so special?
A: The excitement surrounding this type of floor comes from the fact that no 2 installations are exactly the same. A Patène Artectura® system will be a one-of-a-kind installation that enhances the natural beauty of concrete.

Q: How do I decide on colors?
A: We do have color charts available, however seeing actual samples or installations is a much better way to appreciate the special look that a Patène Artectura® floor can achieve.

Q: Can I use this system on existing concrete?
A: Yes it can be used on existing concrete as new as one day old, and 100 year old concrete has very successfully been used with the PA system. The results on old concrete can be quite dramatic because of the inherent "character" that old concrete has.

Q: How do I take care of a reactive stain floor?
A: The PA floor system is highly durable, however it does require periodic maintenance. CHI will issue a Floor Maintenance Guide upon completion of the installation. The guide will outline the "low tech" methods to take care of the floor and recommend products that should be used.

Q: Your minimum sized job?
A: 1000 square feet for floors and 700 square feet for flatwork (all finishes).
