DENVER, CO — Colorado Hardscapes, Inc. (CHI), a Denver-based corporation, walked away with three awards Friday, March 24, 2000 in St. Louis, Missouri at the annual Bomanite® Awards Banquet. Bomanite® is the leader in imprinted, colored concrete textures. “We dominated the scene that night,” said company owner and CEO, Calvin Van Heukelem. From the 225 licensed Bomanite® contractors worldwide, 86 entries were received. “We encourage all our licensees in the 72 countries in which Bomanite® has licensed representatives to submit entries,” said Kellie Romero, director of marketing for Bomanite® Corporation in Madera, California. “There were thirty-two project awards presented, many of which were regional awards.” The judges (a panel from within the Bomanite® organization) evaluated each job based on the photographs, project descriptions, and supporting materials submitted with each entry. “The judging was equally based on 1) overall aesthetics 2) creative use of Bomanite® applications 3) quality of installation, and 4) technical difficulty,” said Romero.
The Aurora Justice Center (HDR Engineering, Inc.) exterior paving won the Outstanding Bomanite® Project Worldwide 1999 Silver Award. “Colorado Hardscapes participated with the city of Aurora and their design team in the planning and on-site sampling for the project,” said Christy Bol, sales and marketing assistant for CHI. Deteriorating exterior terrazzo was replaced with Bomanite® decorative paving. “Five colors were used with three different geometric patterns,” said Bol. According to Mike Price, project coordinator for the City of Aurora Public Buildings Division, “Colorado Hardscapes was an absolute pleasure to work with. From the formation of the team, to visits to their facility during product and color selection, and through installation, it went very smoothly. Once the job started, we just stepped aside and CHI produced a fantastic job under difficult job site requirements.”
"Challenges included keeping the 40 separate pours at the same elevations, keeping the colors separated in the same pour, and correctly aligning all the tooled joints. All this took place while maintaining public access to the building,” said CHI sales manager, Jay Fangman. “We had already voted the Aurora Justice Center as our best Bomanite® job ever, so it was gratifying to see that our associates felt the same way.”
Colorado Hardscapes also earned the Outstanding Bomanite® Project Worldwide 1999 Bronze Award for their work at Four Hundred Third (Haswell Design), a luxury high-rise condominium in Denver. “This job called for a distinctive main entry paving scheme with a gazebo in the center,” said Bol. “Black bands separate the colors and create ‘spokes’ that integrate the paving design with lighting and other architectural elements around the perimeter. As a value engineering process, the bands were poured monolithically with the field, saw cut, and colored with a tinted sealer to differentiate them from the field.”
Regionally, Colorado Hardscapes also did well. Their exterior concrete work at the Omni Hotel (RNL Design) in Broomfield, Colorado won the Best Patene Artectura Commercial Project 1999 Silver Award in the Western Region. Patene Artectura is Bomanite®‘s exclusive concrete coloration technique. “Stain was installed over integrally colored and sandblasted areas as well as over standard uncolored concrete. The stain gave a multi-colored look without the expense of multiple concrete pours,” said Bol.
For more than 50 years, Colorado Hardscapes has delivered concrete solutions to a wide variety of needs, both commercial and residential. From assisting with design concepts, to maintenance and repairs, to complete installation of almost anything imaginable, CHI has a concrete application for floors, ceilings, walls, walkways, fountains, rock formations, monuments, signage . . . the list is virtually endless.
