On this date 30 years ago, John Buteyn (pictured on the left opening one of his gifts) began his career with Colorado Hardscapes. At the end of Colorado Hardscapes' Open House, while a few associates and most of the sales staff were still present, the owner, Cal Van Heukelem, and his wife, Shirley, presented John with some gifts to commemorate this significant landmark in the company's history.
Now the Chief Operating Officer, John remembered three things about his first day. "First, it was very pleasant weather on January 17, 1972, and it stayed pleasant throughout that winter," he said. "Second, the entire company consisted of four people, and we were all working on the same job. Third, at the end of the day, knowing nothing about this job, I got a little too close to the forms we had just set up and dumped dirt over the side. I got yelled at by Wendell Van Heukelem [Cal's father]. Thus began my career in concrete."
John received high accolades from Cal Van Heukelem, along with a gold watch engraved with a 30-year commendation, some golf clubs and tee-times to encourage more time away from the office, and a weekend get-a-way for him and his wife, Anne. John in turn thanked the people in the room who had worked with him many of those years. He gave special thanks to his wife, Anne, for her uncomplaining support through the years.
In a note to Cal the following day, John wrote, "Working here has certainly been a challenging and rewarding experience. It has afforded me opportunities to grow in many ways. I have had the opportunity to work with many fine people. I have had experiences here that I would never have had elsewhere. Thank you for including me in growing the finest flatwork construction company in Colorado."
