At Denver Zoo, the Northern Shores Café playspace is perfect for little “monkeys” to get their wiggles out. There, we installed some climbing boulders, a streambed, and a sandbox. We placed most of these features using our shotcrete method, although we also included some pre-casted crabs and starfish in the sandbox.
In addition to forming the shotcrete rockwork by hand, we also hand-painted all of our work. The end product resulted in a specific and detailed look. By incorporating natural-looking play structures, this space coordinates with the rest of the zoo seamlessly. Although not an animal exhibit, the Northern Shores playspace was another one of our favorite zoo projects.
