Ten years ago, we collaborated on an ambitious project to transform the South Platte Riverfront. Working with DHM Design and ECI, we created Denver’s Johnson Habitat Park—a unique space that educates and inspires visitors about Colorado’s natural beauty and river ecology. Fast forward to 2024, and this park remains a testament to the lasting impact of expert craftsmanship and innovative design.

The Vision Behind Johnson Habitat Park
Johnson Habitat Park is more than just a recreational area. It’s part of a larger vision to restore the riverfront along the South Platte River. DHM Design spearheaded the landscape architecture, aiming to create an educational and inspiring environment for park-goers. With features like large river boulders made of shotcrete, a hollowed-out tree play area, a compass rose with Bomanite Imprinted Concrete, and a flower plaza with intricate Lithomosaics, each element was designed to engage the community.

The Making of a Masterpiece
Our team at Colorado Hardscapes played a crucial role in bringing these visions to life. The project required creative problem-solving and precision to construct the various unique elements within the park:
- River Boulders: Crafted from shotcrete to create a realistic, nestled campground.
- Play Area: A hollowed-out tree made entirely of concrete, offering a whimsical play space.
- Compass Rose: Located near the educational building, this feature includes Bomanite Imprinted Concrete and Color Hardener panels.
- Concrete Overlook: Providing a stunning view over the South Platte River.
- Flower Plaza: Featuring sandblasting, planter walls, Color Hardener, and Lithomosaics for a vibrant, textured finish.

Why Johnson Habitat Park Stands the Test of Time
Revisiting the park today, it’s evident that our work has stood the test of time. The Lithomosaics, sandblasting, color hardener, Sandscape walls, shotcrete boulders, and other features look as pristine as they did a decade ago. This enduring quality is a result of several key factors:
- Expert Craftsmanship: Our team’s process-oriented mindset and expertise ensured that every element was built to last.
- Quality Materials: Our partnership with Bomanite allowed us to use their superior decorative concrete systems, which have proven incredibly durable.
- Passion and Pride: Each employee involved in the project took immense pride in their work, evident in every sawcut, trowel, paint stroke, and sandblasted element.

Client Feedback
We collaborated closely with DHM Design on this project, and their understanding of decorative concrete was invaluable. They have also partnered with us on other significant projects, such as the Adams County Veterans Memorial, which similarly showcases a range of decorative concrete finishes. Their feedback highlights the success of our collaboration and the impact of our combined expertise.
